Random Wednesdays: Novel Excerpt

Hello lovely readers and thanks for joining me for the midweek edition :)!

wed1Queen of the Black Gate, my dark fantasy novel, is set to be released in 2016. In its pages you’ll find bloody battles, heart-wrenching betrayal and a group of anti-hero type characters that I can’t wait for you to meet. Over the last months I’ve shared snippets from the manuscript and today I want to do the same :).

We enter as two of Queen Aeshma’s guardians, Targo and Lilith, have a rather uncomfortable conversation. Enjoy :):

Queen of the Black Gate (Chapter 12 excerpt)

wed2~ “Why are you here?” Targo asked Lilith, his expression unchanging.

“Oh for the days when this cold demon I see before me greeted me with warmth and affection.” Targo met her eyes, unflinching,

“Those days are long gone, lost in the same way as your sense of duty it would seem? Did the queen not order you to lead the executions?” Lilith sobered, her green eyes speaking the truth before she did,

“Yes,” she said simply,

“Then I ask again, why are you here?” Targo watched as Lilith peered down the path Aeshma had taken.

“Curiosity only. Do you not find the queen’s actions strange of late?” Targo answered carefully,

“As I’ve told you before Lilith, the queen’s actions are her own concern. I will not be drawn into speculative talk regarding her.” Lilith laughed,

wed3“He says my name, finally. I thought you had forgotten it.” Lilith winked suggestively, a simple flirtation that would have taken him to her bed in moments in years past. Targo shook these thoughts away, reminding himself of his purpose.

“You should return to your duty before the queen comes back.”

“So she has made way down there?” Lilith asked, moving so quickly that had Targo not been expecting it, she would have already been barrelling down the pathway after Aeshma. His quick step in front of her had cut Lilith off, causing her to crash into him instead, their armour crashing together disturbing the relative quiet of the dank temple. Lilith looked up at him, a faint remnant of her smile still on her lips.

wed4“It would be better if metal and iron did not separate us,” she said, lightly touching Targo’s face. Her skin against his was still as enticing as he remembered and for moments he simply looked down at her, taking in this new corpse she had acquired, that was so different from the last. He gripped her arms, feeling the cold of metal instead,

“Yet this is the case and you, must go,” he said firmly. Lilith moved away from Targo, feeling the moment when she’d lost him again as strongly as when they’d first had to part ways. She gathered herself and her thoughts,

wed5“Very well, entreat the queen on my behalf when she returns. I wish to have words with her.” With that she turned, moving like the shadowed figure that had first approached and Targo watched, trying not to long for something he knew he could no longer have. ~

The interactions between these two are always fun to write. The underlying tension grows throughout the book, especially as slowly they’re forced to take sides.
