Random Wednesdays: Kill Your Darlings

No, I’m not talking about the film (which incidentally I haven’t seen yet), but about writing in general.

battleI’ve been working on the first book in an epic fantasy series recently and in a particularly gruesome battle scene my mind took a trip back to the first beloved character I ever killed. She was the protagonist of a science fiction story and was so dear to me that in the end I left it open-ended — she was gone, lost in another realm of shape and colour, but dead to everyone else. I remember tears falling as I wrote that years ago and more when I re-read for the edit. That story sits on my desktop waiting for me to blow the dust away.

forgivenessMore recently in book one of a science fantasy trilogy, I endorsed another death that left my beta-readers up in arms over the fact that I’d killed their beloved. I have received good-natured threats, promises of never-ending rage and others decided that they would never forgive me for the affront, but oh, they can’t wait to read the next ^_^.

deathnoteI said all that to come to this point: Sometimes writers have to kill their darlings. Sometimes we have to kill the readers’ favourites. Don’t be discouraged by emotions and ignore pivotal points like this in your story that could make it even more amazing to read. We can cry when it’s over or dash the computer away as the sickening finality sinks in (okay don’t do that they’re costly). However, don’t be afraid to make their lives miserable to enhance your story. Don’t be afraid to kill.
