Monday Insights: The Art of Walking Away

A friend and I were having a conversation recently and since then, she’s been prompting me to write on this topic, so, here goes.

walkaway Sometimes, even though we want to keep loving someone and want to stay by their side, whether it’s a family member, friend or significant other, we can’t. The thing is, many of us try and try to fix what’s wrong and even go as far as involving other parties (counselling, etc), to see if the dynamic in the relationship can become positive again. But, when we’ve tried and hurt and cried just enough, we cannot keep going on. It becomes emotionally unhealthy and in many cases, tells on our physical and mental selves. It is so important to know when to walk away from a situation.

As I write this, I’m thinking of the ones I’ve had to sprint away from, the ones I’ve barely crawled away from and those I’m yet to see in my rear-view.

Do not let your life dwindle away trying to save someone or something. Promote happiness in your life — walk away.

  1. One of the most difficult things to do is to walk away. If you are an empathetic person, you feel like you’ve failed in some way. When we realize that we can walk away and the world won’t end, we are stronger for it.

  2. I don’t give up on people easily. But, I realize there are toxic people in this world, those who, no matter what we do, never fit into our lives without causing us pain. You are so right. If this situation arises, we must create some distance, and get out of their reach.

  3. Very good advice, if you’re both drowning and they have no intention of swimming, you need to save yourself. Hard to do but worth it!
