A Social Calling; Breakthrough With Me?

I won’t pretend, I am not a lover of social networking, to me it always seems like one more thing to do in the day and, if you’re on many sites – MANY more things to do as you update, respond, create new entries, upload pictures and videos, add friends — you get the point. It can be very time consuming and that’s probably my biggest issue with it. Don’t misunderstand me, blogging is one of the things I truly enjoy. Unloading my latest progress on whoever will take the time to read; bliss. It’s the other things, the Facebook and the Twitter and the ‘Insert cool/weird sounding name here’ that sometimes seems so tiresome. Despite all this however, I realise the necessity of social networking and, as I said I would, by the end of  January I will be unveiling both Twitter and Facebook accounts, complete with running commentary and things I don’t share on this blog.

Secondly, I will be submitting my manuscript, ‘peddle baby’ for the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award. Still very grateful to fellow blogger Kate Policani, for her post about it. You can find her blog here: http://katepolicani.com/   as she often has great advice for writers and an interesting blog overall. As for the competition, writers are allowed to submit in the genres of Young Adult or General Fiction (not both) and submissions open January 23, 2012. It’s a great opportunity for any writer and in my opinion, there’s absolutely nothing to lose if you decide to submit. So all the best to any of you who decide to take the plunge along with me :).

The new kid is progressing, it seems I will be on track for my January 31, 2012 finish. However, in case life happens, I’ve tacked on two extra weeks as the absolute latest I want to be done. I was having a few problems with it for a little while, because it’s not the kind of subject matter I’ve dealt with so extensively before and was worrying myself silly about if I should continue or not. Then I had a talk with a very good friend of mine who’s also a writer and he allayed doubts and basically put things into their proper perspective. So, now I know why I was feeling as I was and, that it was perfectly okay.

I was very much a loner when I first started writing years ago and hardly ever shared my inner sanctum with regard to prose, with anyone, but now I find it more satisfying to have a few key people I can turn to in moments where I feel overwhelmed with words. It’s something that doesn’t often happen, but before, even when it did, I would refuse to admit it. Somehow it made me feel weak as a writer, to have moments that I needed to stop and think, instead of my usual flurry of fingers to keys; pen to paper. It’s amazing how letting these people in, can sometimes make a world of difference, even when they may just be telling me something I already know.

I will be sure to update you on my new social networking sites and will let you in on which chapter I’m at in the new kid by week’s end. Have a very lovely Thursday readers 🙂
